Injustice: Gods Among Us is the upcoming fighting game being developed by NetherRealm Studios for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Wii U. The game features many of the characters you know and love from the DC Universe, including Batman, Superman, The Flash, The Joker, Cyborg, Green Arrow and many more of your favorite DC Universe characters! The game is said to be being prepared for an April 2013 release, so there’s just a few months now until this game hits the shelves.
The game involves pitching one DC Universe Character against another in a one-on-one battle. The game is set within a two dimension plane, but the characters and scene backgrounds are all rendered in a three dimension fashion. Each one-on-one battle consists of just one round, and each player has two health bars. The game is trying to break away from the current one-on-one fighting genre, it tries to do this in a few different ways; one of them being the layout of the controls…
The game has a very simple four button layout of light, medium, heavy attacks and a “character trait” button which activates your characters special ability or attack. For example, Batman’s special trait summons a swarm of robotic bats to come to his aid and Superman’s special trait is a temporary statistic boost (making him stronger, faster and more powerful). The co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise and director of NetherRealm Studious, Ed Boon, stated that all of the playable characters within the game fall into one of two categories; they are either a “power character” or a “gadget character”. Batman is a gadget character, while Superman is a power character. Some fighters also have the ability to have more than one fighting style.
Another area where this game tries to set itself apart from other one-on-one fighting type games is with the battle arenas. Each battle arena features destructible environments with multiple tiers and various objects which you as the player can interact with. Every arena has its own unique elements and each character can utilize them differently depending on their class. For example, Batman and his gadget style play can fire projectiles at a car to cause an explosion, while Superman and his power style play can pick-up that same car and use it to hit his opponent. So there are really a lot of different elements to the game depending on which character you’re playing with.
Like with many of the fighting style games, while you’re in battle you will notice your “super meter” charging up as you deliver a beating to your opponent. When your “super meter” hits full you can perform enhanced special moves, and your characters special trait. When you unleash one of these special attacks, you’ll see the damage to your opponent mount up quickly.
The game looks like a lot of fun, and it’s definitely packing features which we have never seen in a one-on-one battle style game before. If you liked Mortal Kombat and that type of gameplay, then the chances are you will like Injustice too – especially if you’re a fan of DC Universe characters.
