The games consoles of today are innovative creations which contain some truly spectacular technology inside their sleek outer shells. Coming in a variety of shapes and sizes, it may seem like each games console varies massively, and this is partly true when it comes to custom built computers (with people sourcing their own components from independent suppliers like XP Power).
With regular gaming consoles, however, the main parts are often very similar, so here is a look at the parts of a modern machine.
CPU
Standing for central processing unit, the CPU is the ‘brains’ behind all gaming console operations. It allows messages to be sent from one part of the machine to the other in the form of electronic signals, which ultimately results in the display which the user sees on their screen.
It is made up of incredibly complex circuitry which reacts to every input (instruction) made by the user (pressing buttons on the controller), allowing the console to execute these commands.
RAM
Random access memory, or RAM as it is more commonly known, is also a crucial part of games console operations. It stores data temporarily, allowing it to be accessed extremely quickly as and when it is needed.
This allows games to be played on the device, as the RAM enables information relating to the various controls to be sent as instructions, making the game responsive to the user’s commands and the game’s instructions. Again, RAM utilises complex circuitry as well as binary technology to store and release information.
GPU
Most modern games consoles are hailed for their incredibly sharp, HD graphics, which have revolutionised gameplay over the years. Thanks to advances in GPUs (graphics processing units), the levels of detail which games are now capable of displaying are unparalleled, especially when compared to the graphics of older games.
That being said, it is likely that GPUs will continue to be improved and updated in the years to come, allowing games to display even more incredible detail and revolutionising the overall gameplay experience for the gamers of tomorrow.
These are just some of the many parts of the modern day games console. They are complex machines which now have more intricacies and impressive features than ever before, so it will be exciting to see (albeit impossible to accurately imagine) how they will look in ten years’ time when gaming technology will have undoubtedly progressed even further.
