The event, the 18th in its series, was held over the June 5 to June 7 intervals at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It also did not fail to deliver on a promise that Star Trek fanatics had been expecting for quite some time now.
Word about a major video game release within the Star Trek franchise first got out from more believable sources after the release of the Star Trek feature film. It was the E3 Convention of 2012 which confirmed the rumors, however. This is where Digital Extremes and Japanese gaming giants Namco Bandai announced they would finally be releasing the game, under the Paramount Digital Entertainment license.
The game will be a third-person action adventure release, to be published at once for Microsoft Windows OS PCs and the world’s most popular two consoles – the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Not that much is known about the game at the moment, save for its plot timeframe and enemy race. According to official sources, the game will feature traditional antagonists Gorn as the humans’ main nemeses, with the story line being set in between the Star Trek and Star Trek into Darkness time periods. For the game, the producers have signed on the voice skills of several of the film’s core cast, among which Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Chris Pine.
In 2009, Paramount Pictures released the feature Sci-Fi flick titled Star Trek, subtitled The Future Begins, and directed by Hollywood great J.J. Abrams. The movie had been in development since the late 1960, which is why it featured the old characters (such as Captain Kirk or Spock), but in new interpretations, fit for the third millennium. Now, the Star Trek franchise isn’t as much of a mainstream obsession as it was back in the sixties – this, however, doesn’t mean that the film didn’t cause waves upon waves of reactions. For one thing, it was perhaps the most successful ever franchise to have transitioned from the small screen to the big one, as the critics and the hardcore fans both swooned, praised, applauded, and eagerly anticipated the film’s continuation.
That sequel has already been announced for 2013, under the title Star Trek into Darkness. It will also be directed by J.J. Abrams, and much of the cast of the first film has announced its official comeback for the second installment. As fans await the release of the sequel and the game, it’s worth noting that the most recent Star Trek game was the 2009 mobile title. Meanwhile, as our research at Games Quest revealed, trekkies are putting the collectibles, novelties, and action figure industry back on the map. An entire host of new products has been released on the market, as official news about the upcoming video PC and console game keeps trickling out from the main sources. So far, avid gamers have learned that the game, based on Marianne Krawczyk’s story, will allow them to play as Kirk and Spock for the first time ever—and will heavily focus on team efforts.
